STATEMENT
Fifth, Forbes & Market Square is a photographic documentary of the Fifth & Forbes Avenues in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These two avenues have been the lifeblood of Pittsburgh and the many neighborhoods they encompass and travel thru for many years. From dirt roads to Mansion Row to urban decay and now a new revitalization, these avenues show the social fabric of Pittsburgh from the millionaires of Shadyside and Point Breeze to the down and out selling plasma in the lower Hill District to boarded up storefronts in Market Square standing next to a brand new department store.
Fifth & Forbes has schools, universities, churches, museums, bathhouses, department stores, homes, parks, hospitals, restaurants, bookstores, parades, marathons and everything in-between. As Pittsburgh enters the 21st century it is undergoing another renaissance. There has been controversy over the Fifth & Forbes corridor and Market Square for years now, I will be documenting this entire area as well as Fifth & Forbes from end to end before there are any more major changes taking place. All too often buildings are razed and then forgotten forever, Pittsburgh is a city of immense history but also a city going through immense changes. For cities to remain alive and vibrant they must change; but respect must be given to those who have come before.
This photographic journey will have other uses as well, it well be used to promote Pittsburgh to many others in the form of a traveling exhibit and book, photos will be available for stock usage, studies in art & architecture, transportation, retail, landscaping, urban usage of public spaces and sociological studies. Things done right and things done wrong, but most importantly will be the people of Fifth & Forbes, portraits will be done of people on the street, people in their homes, people at work and at play revealing the diversity that is Pittsburgh.
