Karl Mullen Statement

KARL MULLEN

STATEMENT

Karl Mullen, a native of Dublin, is a self-taught artist, composer, singer, songwriter, and arts educator.  For over 20 years he has been creating, performing, and exhibiting his art across the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Europe. Karl Mullen is an artist in the truest sense.  Art is his bread. His water. His air. His currency.  It is the skin he wears like the tune of a song, the stroke of a brush, the voice of a people.  And it is everywhere.  Karl's paintings appear on an array of informal and accidental surfaces from receipts to windows, even toilet paper; in media ranging from tea and blood to acrylics and oil, which defy the boundaries of conventional art with a populace stance.

For the last two years, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette has recognized Mullen as one of the Top 50 Cultural Forces in Pittsburgh.  He was chosen as one of Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Innovators Without for 2002, which recognized independent artists who create unusual work or devise distinct artistic events without the benefit of institutional support or widespread fame.  An accomplished international visual artist, Mullen has been the recipient of many awards including the Buncher Award for Painting and Pittsburgh Magazine’s Harry Schwalb Excellence in Arts Award.  He has had countless musical releases during his career and was recently chosen by the Songwriters Hall of Fame to be included on The Best of the Songwriters Hall of Fame Showcase: Volume I and has received a Grammy nomination for his song entitled Whiskey from the Field.  Mullen has been recognized by WYEP radio as one the Top 10 Local Artists of 2002 as well being included in their Top 20 CDs of 2001 with his release of Mercy Me With Curses.  He has designed and performed soundscapes with the Junction Dance Theatre, Frick Fine Arts Museum, Bricolage Productions, Brew House, and Quantum Theatre.

Art is for everyone.  This curious notion comes from his heritage as an Irish-born, self-taught artist who embraces art as a birthright—a powerful voice in politics and revolution, taverns and laundry rooms. Conveyed for years with his guitar and a poetical knack for challenging oppression, Karl now brings this fervor to the visual realm.  Giving back to the community he participates in, to name a few, the Pittsburgh Food Bank Empty Bowls event, Art for AIDS, Rock Against Racism, and the National Council for Urban Peace and Justice.

"I am as concerned with magic as I am with meaning,” muses Mullen." I still cling to the notion that art can mean something, that the individual can mean something. That, beyond the social mask, art and art-making are a vital and necessary activity. What's important about art is the promotion of critical thinking that results in a shared caring about a community, or a conversation about issues that may be hard or unpopular, but that need to be expressed.”
