BARBARA BROFF GOLDMAN

STATEMENT

    I have grown to prefer experimentation to concentration. I consider myself to be a multimedia artist.  I work with fabrics, handmade papers, needle and thread, ceramics and printmaking, combining these mediums as they connect in the same piece.

     For several years now I have explored the artist's book as structure, a container for words and images.  My books are a vehicle for the life around me both observed and experienced.  They start with an internal dialogue, a memory, or an emotion.  I then search for visual expression, using a wide range of materials.  I strive to create an atmosphere of introspection and interrogation.  The layering and unfolding of images and words reflect the non-linear way our ideas are revealed.

     Books are a wonderful vehicle for printmaking.  They add a dimensional aspect unlimited by form, space, and boundaries. As a printmaker, I often incorporate my prints into my artist’s books.  I print on handmade papers or fabrics, occasionally wood and metal.  My enthusiasm for printmaking  is prompted by the endless possibilities and combinations of techniques that can be worked together in creating a print. My work is often three dimensional, taking on a sculptural form.

      I am always in search of fresh ideas while continuing to express myself.
